What to do when a long glob of clear fluid drops from your nose and plops into the hot chili that you’re eating?: Stir.
Also, I was hiking along today and I had to keep scratching my bum. Then I realized that my bum was intermittently being scratched without my assistance. I looked back hopefully but: nobody. I realized that I had a stick in my underwear. I removed it carefully, thanked it for its service, and tossed it.
Thirteen tough miles today. I just didn’t have the mojo I had yesterday. Hopefully I’ll be able to sleep tonight and not freeze like most nights.
Memory told me to bring a jacket and I should have listened. She seems to take increasing delight in hearing about me freezing out here now…
Again I saw some beautiful streams, rivers, flowers and even came upon a magic mushroom gnome hamlet! Look carefully- one little fella poked his head out to say something. It sounded like “buy a jacket.”

Crossed into North Carolina today where I’m in my tent now. GLAD to have Georgia behind me. It’s not just that I made every mistake in the book here, it’s that…. oh…. well… maybe that is it.

What happened to no more than 8 miles a day for the first two weeks? Throw in an easy day to recover, there’s no rush.
Nice photo array as always, Memory doing a great job with the graphics.
You’re doing great 👍
Derek wants to know what you’re eating…

helloooo Kevin! so thrilled and mortified for you at once that you are on this grand adventure. ok, and a little jealous. calculated at my wandering pace stopping to look and take fieldnotes that it would take me six years straight but of course would freeze to death the first winter. though I would of course bring a jacket. seriously I am so inspired by your fortitude and willingness and bravery! I so appreciate you sharing your trip; your writing is wonderful. And so funny… from my warm bed this early morning. Sending you good vibes from California. And be safe. Or Memory’s going to be so pissed.

Wait a minute… I was extremely impressed with my 60 year old uncle hiking the Appalachian trail BUT that was until I read you went straight from Georgia to North Carolina ?! you get to skip South Carolina entirely.!!. WTF!!! Are u on the trail still? I hope you remember what we learned in the army you only cheat yourself when you cheat. P.S. I know memory is probably lonely and missing you for some strange reason. As your nephew I reluctantly volunteer to keep your beautiful amazing girlfriend company and spend the night in your place.
Love you Kev be safe the hardest step is the first one and that’s behind you. Ill be at the finish line in 6 short months.

Enjoy the journey

Hey Cousin! This is your cuz Pam (McMillan) Drake in case you are wondering who “catlady” is! This is a great blog and wanted to wish you well on your journey! It reminds me of the book/movie “Wild”. I didn’t read the book but saw the movie with Reese Witherspoon. I especially enjoyed reading about you camping out with the Boy Scout leader who is the dad of 4 Eagle Scouts! My son, Dylan, is an Eagle Scout as well as my husband Greg. The Boy Scout motto is “Be Prepared” so I know that guy probably had a jacket with him. LOL Maybe your nickname could be “No jacket required???” Anyway, thank you for your many years of service to this country Kevin! My son Ausitn is a 1st Lt. in Security Forces at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM and recently went to the Army Base in Fort Bliss, TX and completed the Air Assault Course. His Captain then nominated him for the Army Ranger school so there could be another Ranger in the family! He has applied. I guess the Army only accepts 30 Airmen for the course. Will he really have to walk thru a swamp in FL with the gators and snakes?? He will train in Georgia if he makes it so when you talked of hearing the machine guns in Georgia and how your weren’t worried becuz you knew it was the Army practicing, I thought about my son and how he could be there this summer. All the best to you Kevin! I’ll be following you here! Stay safe and you should write a book!!

Ok, all caught up and only running 20 minutes behind. What a fun way to get lost this morning. I need to check in with Memory and see if you’ll be back when I visit this summer. Until then, I’ll keep reading. Stay safe! Love you!
